The Technology Development Missions (TDM) programme is an exclusive programme in IISc and the IITs launched by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India in 1994 in response to the observations in 1991 of the Prime Minister of India on the need for India to move to the forefront of technology. The TDM programme is intended as a National effort towards technology development with the direct involvement and participation of industries. Specific objectives of the TDM programme include:
- Strengthen R&D capability of Indian Industry in a significant way
- Develop innovative technologies, products, and processes having relevance for socio-economic development of the country and transfer the technology to industries
- To promote a stronger linkage between the industry and IITs/IISc
- To promote joint technology development initiatives between the IITs and IISc
- Promotion of team work in mission oriented projects
Already several technologies have been transferred to industry and some more technologies are in the process of being transferred. The overall success of TDM-I was highly appreciated in the National Steering Committee meeting of the Planning Commission held on August 06, 1999 at New Delhi.
The TDM Phase I experience was unique and empowering and as it achieved powerful collaborations involving multi-institute, multi-industry and the government that has produced some very useful technologies for our country. Encouraged by the success of TDM Phase I, the Phase II of TDM is currently being actively explored.
